Connie Kirby - Project Management
Since starting just over two months ago, I have already gained a more comprehensive view on project management than I ever expected to on my placement year. LCH.Clearnet has decided not to throw me in at the deep-end, and have planned my year in order to support me to develop and learn at my own pace. I expected to be put straight into a project; however I have been working in the IT MIT department since I started and will be doing so for another couple of weeks. IT MIT support project managers, produce analysis of projects and also help sustain project quality and deliverability. Starting in MIT is similar to a thorough preparation process. I now understand in detail what impacts project delays and ‘best practice’ project management. I have also been surprised with how much responsibility I have been permitted and how much contribution I have been persuaded to provide; I have been given the target of managing my own project in 6 months time and I am fortunate that LCH.Clearnet see their placement students as a fresh pair of eyes, respecting and encouraging their opinions and ideas.
I already understand how valuable my placement year at LCH.Clearnet will be for my future. They have encouraged me to take training courses that will not only be beneficial for my current work, including the PRINCE2 qualification, but also for my final year studies and for securing a graduate job. Working at such a well-renowned financial institution will definitely give me the experience I want, but also a foot up the ladder for when I come to landing a graduate job.
Craig Rumbelow - Risk Management
I joined LCH.Clearnet as part of the Risk Operations Team within Risk Management. The Risk Department as it suggests is responsible for monitoring, margining and controlling market risk and inherent counterparty risk between LCH.Clearnet’s client members. My daily responsibilities include monitoring a range of financial derivatives such as futures, options, equities and commodities across many exchanges. My ability to understand and interpret these proxies has developed enormously and I am confidently looking forward to working with these in the future.
From the outset, I was surprised with how readily my team gave me responsibility for tasks and in the same fashion were quick to offer support. I’ve attended numerous internal and external courses arranged by my manager to assist me with my day to day duties and general understanding of the financial markets. LCH.Clearnet and a role within Risk Management specifically is an ideal opportunity for candidates seeking a career within the financial markets.
Edward Baker - Risk Management
I have been on placement at LCH.Clearnet for 2 months now, working in the Rates team within the Risk Management department. The main responsibilities of the Rates team are to manage day-to-day risk of SwapClear and RepoClear products and monitor margin models as well as testing new products and other various projects. Joining a small team with lots of responsibilities was challenging, but everyone was very helpful and always willing to answer any questions I had. Joining at a time when markets were particularly volatile and just before the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy made things even more difficult, but I am sure the experience I am gaining will be invaluable both for my final year of university, and when trying to enter a challenging job market.
Adam Fry - IT Testing
I’ve been on placement within LCH.Clearnet for just over 2 months now and I work within the IT testing department. The role of the IT testing department is to test all software that are used internally so that it conforms to all the need and wants of the company. The IT department as a whole is very large and a lot of different projects are running simultaneously; meaning that there are lots of opportunities for new employees.
Since starting I have attended many training courses to develop my understanding of the company and the markets and also to develop my skills as an employee, which I found very helpful. The atmosphere within the company is very welcoming and there is always someone to turn to for help.
The selection process for gaining my placement was more thorough and rigorous than some other organisations. This showed the professionalism and high quality that LCH.Clearnet work to at a very early stage and my opinion of the company has only improved.
I would highly recommend an industrial placement, as the experience you gain will give you a huge advantage over students who did not choose to do one. You gain real world experience in the area that you wish to work in and potential employers will take notice of this. Also, it gives you a great indication of whether the career path that you have planned is correct for you. Personally, I have already found that it has made me much more organised, responsible and much more confident to enter work after university.
